Omphalus (2021)
Commissioned by NETS Victoria
In collaboration with Amrita Hepi and Honey Long

Omphalus is a video work that explores themes of bodily connection and distortion. The title refers to the navel, the scar that marks our connection to life through the umbilical cord. Inspired by cultural theorist Barbara Creed's work on the "monstrous feminine," the piece examines archetypal representations of women as monsters, from Greek mythology to contemporary horror.

Through the use of a single inflatable limb and visual symmetry, the work experiments with fragmented and distorted depictions of the female body. The result is an abstract, kaleidoscopic sequence of mutating figures and forms that blur the boundaries between human and monstrous, familiar and otherworldly.
